In July 22nd, 2012, the official Twitter of the Catalan’s giant Barcelona FC announced they had successfully reached a deal recruiting his fourth contract for the new season: a young promising football player, Andre Gomes.
Despite being in Portuguese national champion team of EURO 2016, the name Andre Gomes is still quite strange to the world and even in La Liga. Azulgrana has spent up to 35 million euros for the new 23-year-old and the amount could reach 55 million euros. It’s really a small number for a young player whose talent is still in the process of affirmation. So who is Andre Gomes?
Journey becoming a Azulgrana warrior
Andre Filipe Tavares Gomes was born in July 30th, 1993 in Grijó, Vila Nova de Gaia in the city of Porto. Andre Gomes has grown up with football since his youth. Like many passionate boys in Portugal, Gomes was supported by his family starting his junior college football career when he joined FC Porto’s soccer academy in 2005. After 3 years of training in Porto, Gomes moved through the training system of Pasteleira and Boavista to continue to improve on himself.
In 2011, at the age of 18, Gomes joined Benfica. Only a year later, Gomes made his debut against Benfica in a friendly match against Gil Vicente on the eve of the new season. Even so, Gomes was unable to secure a place in Jorge Jesus’s squad, so he went on to join Benfica’s second-placed side. Gomes scored his first goal in his career in a Benfica B’s match against S.C.Braga
Andre Gomes’s promotion was spectacular, with Gomes being picked up by Jorge Jesus a few months after playing for Benfica B. October 18, 2012 was a landmark in Gomes career whe he played as a substitute for Eduardo Salvio and contributed to a 4-star victory against SC Freamunde at Taca de Portugal. Gomes made his debut for Benfica at the Portuguese Premier League in October 27th and scored the winner goal for Benfica’s 3-0 victory against Gil Vicente.
Jorge Jesus kept using Gomes in domestic league games and the Champion League round. With Benfica going down in the last few rounds, Gomes was less used by Jorge Jesus in order to use more experienced players instead.
However, Gomes had proved his worth and talent in the semi-final of the Portuguese Cup of Nations 2013/14 with a decisive goal against the home team of Porto, helping Benfica overcome opponents with a total Score 3-2 after two turns. And then, Benfica gently overtook Rio Ave in the final to be crowned champion.
The rapid advancement of young players like Andre Gomes could not escape the look and interest of Europe’s big clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United. With agent Jorge Mendes, Benfica sold 100% of Gomes ownership to Meriton Capital Limited, a private equity firm, for € 15 million and 25% of the transfer value in the future. It is worth noting that the private company is owned by billionaire Peter Lim, who in May 5/14 has acquired the club Valencia. And when the summer of 2014 came, Gomes moved to Spain to make a Valencia loan on loan as a necessity.
Under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo in Valencia, Gomes immediately demonstrated the talent and qualities of a future star. With his first season appearances for the Estadio Mestalla home team, Andre Gomes officially joined Valencia in June 12th, 2015 with a contract that runs until 2020.
Although Valencia has a swampy 2015- 2016 season, Gomes is still outstanding in important matches and has always been an important choice under Nuno Santo’s reign, followed by Gary Neville and Pako Ayestaran. With his talent and style, Gomes was given a position with Portugese team in EURO 2016. He has played five matches, contributed a tectonic phase on the way to conquer EURO Cup.
With good performances in Valencia and EURO 2016, Gomes has become the target of transferring between major clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea. And finally, Andre Gomes has landed on Azulgrana with a transfer fee of up to 55 million euros.
